Restored black wood stove set into a painted timber mantelpiece

The people who fix the fireplaces other people gave up on

Restoration and maintenance specialists in modern and antique fireplaces and wood- and coal-burning stoves, working across the Western Cape for more than 22 years.

22 years of other people's chimneys

Fireplace Doctor started with a simple observation: most fireplace problems aren't caused by the fireplace. They're caused by a flue that's too short, a seal that's perished, a chimney that was never swept, or a unit that was installed by somebody who had never installed one before.

Since then we've serviced, swept, restored and installed thousands of units across the Cape — from antique cast-iron stoves that needed parts machined from scratch, to closed-system units going into brand-new builds. We're the people other installers phone when a job turns out to be more complicated than it looked.

We work on wood, coal and gas. We're registered with the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Safety Association, and we're guaranteed installers for major suppliers, which means having us do the work protects your manufacturer's warranty rather than voiding it.

What we do

Four services cover almost everything a fireplace needs over its life. If your problem isn't on this list, phone us anyway — unusual jobs are the ones we enjoy.

Servicing & troubleshooting

Keep it working

We service brick and freestanding fireplace flues, and gas units. A service covers the firebox, the baffle, the rope seals, the glass, the flue and the draw, and ends with the 15-point check below.

We also take on the problems people have stopped reporting: a room that smokes whenever the wind turns, water running down the inside of the flue, a unit that burns through wood but never heats the room.

Replacement parts & roof seals

Specialist work

Parts for old and antique fireplaces usually aren't on a shelf anywhere. We source what exists and manufacture what doesn't — grates, baffles, doors, handles and firebricks.

We also replace roof seals and flashings where the flue penetrates the roof, and supply the specialised glass rope that closed-system units need to stay airtight.

Installation into new or existing spaces

Flawless workmanship

New freestanding fireplaces, and units fitted into existing brick chimneys or braais. We handle the flue run, the hearth, the clearances and the finish, and we leave the room clean.

No installation is too complex. Where a standard flue route won't work, we design one that will — which is how most of our work comes to us.

Chimney extensions & sweeping

Perfect operation

A chimney that's too short for its surroundings will never draw properly, no matter how good the unit is. Extending it often fixes a smoking problem outright and costs far less than replacing the fireplace.

Sweeping clears the creosote that causes stack fires. Every two to four years is the right interval for most homes, and it's the cheapest fire safety you can buy.

The 15-point service and chimney sweep check

Our checklist and certificate of conformity is setting a new standard for fireplace servicing and maintenance in the Cape. You get a written record of what was checked, what was found and what was done — the document your insurer will want to see after a chimney fire.

A small team of specialists, not a call centre

The person who quotes your job is the person who does it. Our installers are specialists in fireplaces and flues, not general handymen who also do fireplaces, and that shows up in the finish as much as in the function.

We guarantee client satisfaction. If something isn't right after we've left, we come back and put it right.

How we work

Great service

We guarantee client satisfaction, and we come back if something isn't right.

Highest standards

We pride ourselves on the quality of our work and the finish it leaves behind.

Professional team

Our installers are specialists in their field, not general handymen.

Creative solutions

We find a way through the most specific or complex installations.

Our work is guaranteed

We offer a 6-month guarantee on installation work and a 3-month guarantee on service work. We are guaranteed installers with major suppliers, so having your fireplace professionally installed by us protects your warranty rather than invalidating it.
